Jan. 18 was an essential day to reflect on the lea Jan. 18 was an essential day to reflect on the leadership and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. It’s been 53 years since he was assassinated in Memphis, yet in 2020 his calls for nonviolent protest and civil disobience were echoed louder than ever by the American people. #blacklivesmatter .
Meanwhile, Dr. King’s Boston roots run deep; a point of pride for Team Bootstrap. Earning a doctorate in systematic theology from @bostonu in 1955, King also preached at the Twelfth Baptist Church in Roxbury (@twelfthbaptistchurch) AND met his future wife, Coretta Scott (then a student at the @necmusic) during his time in eastern Massachusetts.

An early adopter of the service, an aspiring young environmentalist and communications professional, Igor, joined Andy as co-founder to help build up and scale the business. The company was also selected as a finalist for the prestigious @masschallenge business accelerator competition, where Andy and Igor built up a network of mentors and learned from their fellow entrepreneurs in the program (shout out to @freightfarms) as well as from visionaries like the founders of Kayak and iRobot. Not only was it a good time, but it was a transformative experience that allowed Bootstrap to grow as a business. Not to forget that 2012 was also the year that Bootstrap was able to move out of the backyard! We finally got a warehouse & office space in Charlestown, allowing us to take in and serve more clients, of which we were now approaching 400! Onward and upward!

FLASH BACK FRIDAY! In celebration of our 10 years FLASH BACK FRIDAY! In celebration of our 10 years in operation, we’re going to be posting highlights from each year for the next... nine Fridays!
Kicking it off with 2011! In year one, Andy operated Bootstrap out his driveway and back porch in JP. We are talking running a hose down from the 3rd floor apartment to wash buckets, and bribing neighbors with pizza so they would forgive the smell of food scraps. Pickups were made with handcarts and bike trailers, using random recycled five gallon buckets. Here’s Andy on his porch this past week- reminiscing about the good old days and caffeinating with a faithful friend, the Bootstrap bucket.

New year, new sustainability goals! Here’s a sho New year, new sustainability goals! Here’s a shot of a full first-time pickup from the Newton Square neighborhood in #worcester. All experienced Bootstrappers can attest, nothing is as satisfying as carrying your first heavy bucket out to your stoop.

In other news, our thoughts are with Georgia today as they vote in twin Senate runoffs. Regardless of who controls the chamber, we’d like to see 2021 become a year of reclaiming our national dignity and integrity.

For all you old dudes and chicks raised on late 70 For all you old dudes and chicks raised on late 70s Sesame Street: “one of these cans is doing its own thing.” 🎶🎵🎶 (We doubt that even Oscar the Grouch would approve.) Give us a shout to arrange for a pick up of your tree.
Ten years ago, on a cold New Year’s morning in 2 Ten years ago, on a cold New Year’s morning in 2011, journalist and sometimes kitchen worker, Andy Brooks, walked out of his Jamaica Plain apartment with an armfull of fliers. His plan was to advertise his new idea for a food scrap pick-up service.
Then, on came Igor Kharitonkov to help Andy scale the business. We worked out of our back yards those first couple of years, through rain, sun, and snow. Since then, we’ve gone from bike trailers to a fleet of 9 vans and trucks.
We’ve serviced around 8,000 different households and employed over 80 people.
Most notably, we have composted over 6.5 million lbs of organic waste - the carbon offset equivalent of 4.6 million lbs of greenhouse gases and 239,000 gallons of gas. If that amount of carbon were a forest, it would be equivalent to 2,700 acres.
What’s impossible to quantify is the fun we’ve had, the conversations we’ve started about sustainability, and the good vibes you get when you compost.
🎉Happy 2021 and Happy Birthday Bootstrap! 🎂
