Seriously, nothing makes us happier than donating Seriously, nothing makes us happier than donating $ and/or resources to awesome organizations. Here’s who our Community Outreach Team (COT) donated to in the month of March:
🍎
We were stoked to donate $50 each, to @woo.fridge (Worcester), @pvdcommunityfridge (Providence), @roslindalecommunityfridge (Roslindale), @somervillecommunityfridge (Somerville), and @lynncommunityfridge (Lynn) Community Fridges. We’ve been super inspired to see people coming together to keep their communities fed and healthy during the pandemic.
🌱
COT gave an 8 week gift certificate to Waltham Fields Community Farm (@waltham_fields ) to benefit a recent silent auction. WFCF is all about increasing local agriculture and food access. They have a Seedling Sale coming up (May 8 & 14!) so check them out if you want some high quality plants in your garden this summer.
🎟
We also donated an 8 week gift certificate to a raffle, in part organized by Katy from @bogastowfarmproject
which benefited the Save the Bridge fundraiser. The Bridge is a long standing community and arts center in Worcester at risk of being sold and shut down. #savethebridge is ongoing and so far has been successful in getting attention from the city! (pic from @jmacworcester )
🌷
Last but certainly not least, the COT was thrilled to send 10, five gallon buckets of finished compost over to the Chelsea Community Garden (@chelseacommunitygardenma ). Happy to help make quality soil amendment more accessible to everyone.

🥳Spring is full of reasons to celebrate- Easter 🥳Spring is full of reasons to celebrate- Easter, graduations, getting vaccinated- you name it!
If you’re looking for a fun, compostable party favor, consider cascaronnes. Mostly used in Mexico during Carnival, these hollowed out eggs filled with confetti are now blended with Easter traditions in the States. You can find cascaronnes in Mexican grocery stores, or make your own just by cutting a hole in an egg, pouring out the contents, and sealing the hole with tissue paper and a little glue. Just make sure to use paper confetti, not mylar, before you smash them outside. Also, use the trays after to start some seedlings! Spring!

Digging up your garden to get the soil ready for p Digging up your garden to get the soil ready for planting is a lot of work, but is the digging even worth it?
🌱
This year consider saving your back and practicing ‘no-till’gardening. No-Till is essentially just what it sounds like- leave your soil undug and leave the myriad of soil life, fungi, bacteria and our favorite earthworms, undisturbed! We like to think that fluffy, loose soil is ideal for plants to grow in, but we also don’t see mother nature out there using a shovel!
🌱
No-till farming decreases soil erosion, especially in sandier areas, and can actually help with carbon sequestration. - Tilling releases carbon from the soil, so no-till literally does the opposite. Because tilling disturbs soil, it disrupts the development of healthy fungal growth. Soil fungi produce a glycoprotein called glomalin, which helps bind soil particles together and store carbon. Additionally, the microbial community in the soil is what digests and decomposes organic matter into nutrients for plant use. Tilling will disrupt these communities, hindering the ability for nutrients to be made available for plants.
🌱
To start a new no-till bed, simply clear rocks and debris from an area, then add a thick layer of compost on top. This will suppress any weeds growing in the area and create a nutrient rich bed to start planting. - plants are phototropic, so they will grow towards the warmer soil until they reach the sun. You can use cardboard or any sunlight blocking material to cover the area you want to plant, a technique known as "solarizing". This heats up the soil and triggers weed seed germination, but prevents photosynthesis, killing the weeds quickly. For continued protection, cut holes in the material for planting and leave the rest of the area covered.
🌱
Soil amendments, like compost, can be top dressed, meaning just added to the very top layer of soil, and get pulled into the soil by watering and natural processes. This is the essence of the no-till method. Instead of reshaping the soil, we build a new layer each time. This is the way it's been done without us interfering for millions of years!
Take comfort in this: Bootstrap accepts 100-natura Take comfort in this: Bootstrap accepts 100-natural fabrics like cotton, wool, hemp and silk. Of course, donating said items is awfully neat too. But if that sweater or scarf is unfit for any self-respecting human, Team Boot will happily give it new life as a soil amendment.

Compost not only adds nutrients to your soil, it introduces valuable microorganisms to your garden, such as beneficial bacteria, fungi and protozoa. These little guys help to aerate the soil, convert nitrogen into a usable form for flora, and can help make your garden more disease-resistant.
