After weeks of planning, research, and talking to customers like you, Bootstrap is thrilled to announce Hereafter - our collection program for select reusables!
For just $8 per month, this offering will ease your burden of finding impactful upcycling and repurposing channels by providing a clean and convenient means to see four omnipresent items — textiles, cardboard, coffee pods, and plastic baggies — express a dignified afterlife. Amen! Now let’s dive into the details of what we’re accepting, why and how this material will be used.
What: Flattened, brown matte cardboard, including paper towel and TP tubes, free of tape and labels.
Why: Because cardboard is a serviceable carbon resource for composting and an effective insulation material for vermicomposting.
How: Bootstrap will sort and use these collections both for our in-vessel worm module (Everett, Mass.) and as a feedstock for making compost (all over New England and the mid-Hudson Valley).
What: Coffee pods constructed of compostable or plastic shells.
Why: Because millions upon millions of pounds of coffee grounds hidden in brands like K-Cup (10.5 grams per capsule) are landfilled annually in the U.S.
How: Bootstrap will extract and compost the grounds from each individual pod. All remaining plastic or aluminum will be landfilled.
What: Clean and dry plastic baggies (limited to resealable or store shopping bags). Plastic film, cups, containers, and tableware of any sort are prohibited.
Why: Because we believe that plastic baggies are still serviceable commodities in their current state.
How: Bootstrap will deliver these collections as no-cost poop bags to animal clinics, veterinary offices and dog parks across our service area.

#Honeydews are a big hit in our household (because they’re delicious). They’re also a real hammer to our head when we consider that they grow — at the least – 2,800 miles from this particular compost site outside #HudsonNY. That's a whole lot of fuel, folks.
Fortunately, what composting does (seemingly in its infinite utility), is to assuage that pang, ever so slightly. As if to say:
“Don’t worry. We’ll take it from here. Future soil amendment for local produce Coming Soon.”
And somehow that sort of makes the image of several snowflakes on a cantaloupe rind less jarring — and more like something redeeming. #whywebootstrap

It really is so, so wonderful to see this kind of enthusiasm for composting and sustainability in an office setting.
We are creatures of habit and we like our workflows like we like our movies-uninterrupted. And thats normal!
That’s why Bootstrap is so hands-on with education and setting up office accounts. Sure, we could just drop off some posters and a can and hope it goes well, “send us an email if you have questions”, but getting into these businesses and having conversations with the people, with our actual faces, always proves to be a huge piece to the puzzle of creating successful and rewarding partnerships with incredible people and businesses.

Fourteen years ago TODAY, a follically unchallenged upstart by the name of Andy Brooks posted several flyers in his #JamaicaPlain neighborhood advertising food scrap pickup service for area residents — by bicycle!
Within two weeks, Bootstrap Compost had nearly 30 customers and a queue of 66 emails.
Within a few months, Bootstrap had a Web site.
And within six months of 1/1/2011, Andy found a business partner in Igor Kharitonenkov, a Bootstrap customer with a passion for hiking, travel and the natural environment.
Since the company’s incorporation in 2012, Bootstrap (which welcomed Stom Cadet — a former driver — into the ownership group in 2020) has remained fiercely dedicated to providing clean, convenient, community-centric composting to homes and businesses throughout our service areas.
In Bootstrap’s early years, our mantra was “Too Dumb to Quit.” And though the punishing hours and crummy pay still very much remain, these days we’re guided by a more positive principle — one fully soaked in the conviction that composting is FUN, impactful (over 15 million pounds diverted), endlessly interesting and completely life altering for households, businesses, local economies and local agriculture. Believe us — with 30 staffers and nearly 4,500 subscribers in four states — we can attest!

In the two years since the Bay State banned commercial organics from entering the waste stream (for any business that generates over 1,000 pounds of food waste per week), Massachusetts has “reduced landfill waste,” according to the research journal @sciencemagazine. Now here’s the rub: among all of the states with food waste bans, Massachusetts is alone in actually reducing the amount of organics going to landfills, a @BostonGlobe story reminds us.
Obviously, that’s some bittersweet news, but Team Boot is ultimately buoyed by this report because it validates a long-standing tenet at the company. Transforming food waste into a commodity in the nation’s 16th most populous state can only be achieved with committed TEAMS of people serving varying clients in various locales while employing a variety of methodologies, services and transportation types. Fundamentally, this work cannot be accomplished by a single entity; no way, no how. Partnership and cooperation is essential ... and the end result? Something like a home run for Massachusetts.

Last week we started talking about why the fall is so amazing for compost.
Most of us are sadly ripping out our gardens and it's a nice thought to dream about next spring. The things we will do differently, and better.
I know for me, tomatoes will need much better support, this year they ended up on the ground being nibbled by bunnies and other critters.
Another thing to add to the list of "do better next year" is MORE COMPOST! Like, WAY MORE. Established beds need a refresher and new beds need a lot more organic matter to hold water better and deliver more nutrients.
