#Honeydews are a big hit in our household (because they’re delicious). They’re also a real hammer to our head when we consider that they grow — at the least – 2,800 miles from this particular compost site outside #HudsonNY. That's a whole lot of fuel, folks. Fortunately, what composting does (seemingly in its infinite utility), is to assuage that pang, ever so slightly. As if to say: “Don’t worry. We’ll take it from here. Fourteen years ago TODAY, a follically unchallenged upstart by the name of Andy Brooks posted several flyers in his #JamaicaPlain neighborhood advertising food scrap pickup service for area residents — by bicycle! Within two weeks, Bootstrap Compost had nearly 30 customers and a queue of 66 emails. Within a few months, Bootstrap had a Web site. And within six months of 1/1/2011, Andy found a business partner in Igor Kharitonenkov, a Bootstrap customer with a passion for hiking, travel and the natural environment. Since the company’s incorporation in 2012, Bootstrap (which welcomed Stom Cadet — a former driver — into the ownership group in 2020) has remained fiercely dedicated to providing clean, convenient, community-centric composting to homes and businesses throughout our service areas. In Bootstrap’s early years, our mantra was “Too Dumb to Quit.” And though the punishing hours and crummy pay still very much remain, these days we’re guided by a more positive principle — one fully soaked in the conviction that composting is FUN, impactful (over 15 million pounds diverted), endlessly interesting and completely life altering for households, businesses, local economies and local agriculture. In the two years since the Bay State banned commercial organics from entering the waste stream (for any business that generates over 1,000 pounds of food waste per week), Massachusetts has “reduced landfill waste,” according to the research journal @sciencemagazine. Now here’s the rub: among all of the states with food waste bans, Massachusetts is alone in actually reducing the amount of organics going to landfills, a @BostonGlobe story reminds us. Obviously, that’s some bittersweet news, but Team Boot is ultimately buoyed by this report because it validates a long-standing tenet at the company. Transforming food waste into a commodity in the nation’s 16th most populous state can only be achieved with committed TEAMS of people serving varying clients in various locales while employing a variety of methodologies, services and transportation types. Last week we started talking about why the fall is so amazing for compost. Most of us are sadly ripping out our gardens and it's a nice thought to dream about next spring. The things we will do differently, and better. I know for me, tomatoes will need much better support, this year they ended up on the ground being nibbled by bunnies and other critters. SLOP QUIZ: Which of the following is avoidable? a) Death b) Taxes c) Contamination Good job! And yet, as long as composting remains a human activity, there is bound to be contamination. The key then is to mitigate the problem (and it is thee problem for haulers and processors reducing revenue among those cohorts by as much as 20 percent, according to some studies). Now for some good news. Generally speaking, residential contamination is virtually a nonissue save for occasional fruit stickers, rubber bands and twisty ties. Likewise, office accounts do it pretty darn right. The most egregious of contamination comes from restaurants and this owes to (typically) high turnover, multiple stakeholders and their busy nature. For our part, we’ll keep fighting the good fight through increased education, more reminders, better signage and stronger partnerships. Years ago, Miguel started as a driver at Bootstrap on residential routes. These days, he's our chief schmoozer AND large-accounts hauler (operating high-capacity vehicles like our @ford F650 equipped with a Perkins Satellite Collection Unit). Now what’s super cool for us is the unbridled enthusiasm on display in this photo from students at the @greenhalge_school in Lowell. And though it’s certainly conceivable that their giddiness stems from an inevitable summer break, we are 95 percent certain it’s all about their diversion impact.
